Ripple's Ex-CTO Clarifies XRP Origins: Concept Predates Bitcoin
Former Ripple CTO says a payment concept from 2004 preceded Bitcoin, but the XRP Ledger launched later in 2012.
The debate over XRP’s origins has resurfaced after Ripple’s former Chief Technology Officer clarified the timeline of the cryptocurrency's development. In a recent statement, the executive emphasized that a payment concept created by Ryan Fugger in 2004 predates Bitcoin, but the XRP Ledger itself did not launch until 2012.
The distinction aims to correct misconceptions that XRP was directly inspired by Bitcoin. The earlier concept, known as Ripplepay, was a decentralized payment system that later evolved into the XRP Ledger with the involvement of Jed McCaleb and Chris Larsen.
Separating Concept from Implementation
The former CTO noted that while the foundational idea for a peer-to-peer payment network existed before Bitcoin, the XRP Ledger’s consensus algorithm and digital asset were developed years after Bitcoin’s 2009 debut. This clarification comes as part of ongoing discussions about XRP’s technological lineage.
XRP, the native token of the XRP Ledger, has often been compared to Bitcoin, but its development history is distinct. The clarification adds nuance to the narrative of blockchain evolution, highlighting multiple independent efforts to create digital payment systems.
