Xapo CEO says wealthy bitcoin holders are shifting toward loans and yield
Seamus Rocca of Xapo Bank says long-term bitcoin investors are increasingly borrowing against their holdings and seeking income rather than simply sitting on them.
Long-term bitcoin holders are increasingly treating their coins as collateral rather than a static position, according to Seamus Rocca, chief executive of Xapo Bank. In remarks to CoinDesk, Rocca said borrowing against bitcoin and generating income on holdings have become priorities for the bank's more established clients.
A maturing investor base
The shift, as Rocca describes it, is behavioural rather than speculative: investors who intend to keep their bitcoin for years are looking for ways to access liquidity or earn a return without selling the underlying asset. That is a familiar pattern in traditional finance, where large holders of appreciated assets borrow against them instead of triggering a disposal.
Bitcoin-backed lending and yield products have expanded as a category, though they carry risks that plain self-custody does not, including counterparty exposure to the lender and the possibility of liquidation if collateral values fall sharply. The sector's track record is mixed, with several lenders failing during the 2022 downturn.
Rocca's comments are a characterisation of client demand rather than a disclosed set of figures, and no specific volumes or product terms were provided. They nonetheless reflect a broader debate over whether bitcoin's holder base is maturing into one that manages positions actively — using credit and income strategies around a core holding — rather than one focused solely on accumulation.
