Vitalik Buterin Outlines 'Paranoid Mode' for Private AI Use
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin described a setup that masks AI prompts using Tor, zkAPI and local rewriting, while noting speed and coverage trade-offs.
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has outlined a privacy-focused approach to using AI tools, dubbed “paranoid mode,” according to a BeInCrypto report. The setup is intended to obscure prompts and reduce exposure of sensitive information to AI services.
The described method combines Tor for network-level anonymity, zkAPI and local rewriting of prompts before they are sent to external models. Those components are meant to separate the user’s identity and raw input from the AI provider.
Trade-offs acknowledged
Buterin acknowledged that the approach slows down new chat sessions and still leaves gaps in coverage. That suggests the system is not a complete privacy guarantee but a work-in-progress configuration for reducing data leakage.
The disclosure highlights ongoing interest among crypto developers in applying privacy tools such as Tor and zero-knowledge techniques beyond blockchain transactions. It also reflects broader concerns about how AI prompts and conversations are stored and processed by third-party services.
