OpenAI Model Names Spark Leverage Trading on Dead Terra Tokens
OpenAI's GPT-5.6 tiers named Sol, Terra, Luna trigger YOLO trades on Terra Classic and Luna Classic tokens.

OpenAI introduced GPT-5.6 on June 26, a family of frontier models with three tiers: Sol (flagship), Terra (balanced mid-range), and Luna (fast, low-cost). The names overlap with the collapsed Terra ecosystem tokens LUNA and UST, leading to a surge in speculative leverage trading on the dead tokens.
According to OpenAI, Sol performs competitively with Anthropic's Mythos Preview on ExploitBench using roughly 33% of the output tokens, at a price of $5 per million input tokens. Terra and Luna are positioned as more cost-effective options.
Market Reaction
Following the announcement, traders on decentralized exchanges began opening highly leveraged positions on Terra Classic (LUNC) and Luna Classic (LUNA) futures. The tokens, which lost nearly all value in May 2022 after the Terra ecosystem collapse, saw increased trading volume and volatility as speculators bet on name-driven momentum.
While the underlying tokens remain fundamentally defunct, the OpenAI naming has created a temporary speculative frenzy. Analysts caution that such trades are extremely risky and driven purely by memetic association rather than any fundamental change in the projects.
