Coinbase to power Citi stablecoin rails, with fiat conversion for virtual accounts
Citi is tapping Coinbase infrastructure for stablecoin settlement, while Coinbase Virtual Accounts gain automatic fiat conversion through the bank.

Citi is leaning on Coinbase infrastructure to support new stablecoin rails, according to a report from CryptoSlate. The arrangement places the exchange's technology inside the payments stack of one of the largest US banks.
As part of the setup, Coinbase Virtual Accounts will gain automatic fiat conversion through Citi's infrastructure, the report said. That means balances held in the virtual account structure can be converted to traditional currency without a separate step.
What is not yet known
- Neither company has disclosed how many customers are using the arrangement.
- No figures were given for transaction volumes, fees, or launch timelines.
- The specific stablecoin assets supported were not detailed.
The tie-up is the latest sign of large banks exploring stablecoin settlement rails rather than treating them solely as a retail crypto product. Corporate banking has increasingly been framed as an early use case, because tokenized dollar balances can move around the clock and settle faster than traditional correspondent banking. Whether Citi's Coinbase-backed rails scale beyond pilot usage will depend on disclosure the companies have so far not provided.
