Base Post-Mortem Reveals Sequencer Bug Causing Double Outage
Race condition after system reset prevented sequencers from catching up, leading to back-to-back outages.
Base, the Ethereum layer-2 network incubated by Coinbase, has published a post-mortem analysis of two consecutive outages that occurred in early September. The report identifies a sequencer bug triggered by a race condition after a system reset.
According to the post-mortem, the first outage prompted a reset of the sequencer. However, a race condition prevented the sequencers from properly catching up with the network state, causing a second outage shortly after.
The team stated that the issue has been addressed with a hotfix and additional monitoring to prevent recurrence. No user funds were affected, but transaction processing was temporarily disrupted.
Base has experienced growing pains as user activity surged following its mainnet launch. The network processes transactions for decentralized apps and aims to provide low-fee scaling for Ethereum.
