Coinbase Canada CEO Calls for Clearer Rules as Exchange Eyes Expansion
Eric Richmond says permanent regulations are needed for Coinbase to offer derivatives, tokenized assets, and DeFi in Canada.
Eric Richmond, the newly appointed CEO of Coinbase Canada, stated that the exchange requires permanent regulatory frameworks rather than temporary exemptions to expand its services into derivatives, tokenized assets, and decentralized finance (DeFi).
Richmond emphasized that clear and stable rules would enable Coinbase to offer a broader suite of products in Canada, positioning the company as an 'everything exchange' for digital assets.
Currently, Canadian crypto firms operate under transitional regulatory measures, which Richmond said create uncertainty for long-term investment and innovation. He called on regulators to establish definitive guidelines.
Expansion Plans
According to Richmond, Coinbase is exploring opportunities to introduce derivatives trading, tokenized real-world assets, and DeFi products to the Canadian market, pending regulatory clarity.
The push aligns with Coinbase's global strategy to diversify beyond spot trading into more complex financial services. Canada has been a key market for the exchange, which has operated there since 2020.
Richmond's comments come amid ongoing discussions between Canadian regulators and the crypto industry about adapting securities laws to accommodate digital assets while maintaining investor protection.
